Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
